I do no not think we should adopt the code of hammurabi at Cary Grove for three reasons. One, we would have very few people at the school who are able to write due to the fact that that most people would lose their hands as a punishment. Two, because it would cause a significant impact on are equality because it would force some into higher classes and some into lower classes creating inequality. Lastly, it might also cause a total shuffle in are regular day schedule.

I do not think we should adopt the code of hammurabi at Cary Groove because the codes are very harsh to the society. My first reason like I said before is the laws are harsh and uncivilized for example if a son were to strike his father he must loose a hand. My second reason is that the laws do not prove justice. For example if a man reports a crime to the elders and does not have evidence that supports the crime that he is presenting. Then the man must be put to death. My last reason is that some of the laws say that if you commite a robbery and are caught then you are put to death. That would decrease the population of of school by a lot and I do not think that anyone would want to kill a teenager for stealing.

I do not think we should adopt the code of Hammurabi at Cary-Groove because many of the codes are ridged with gruesome consequences. For one, if any one bring an accusation of any crime before the elders, and does not prove what he has charged, he shall, if it be a capital offense charged, be put to death. This shows that if someone went to the principal about a bullying incident but he/she did not physical proof, they would be killed. It’s not fair to kill someone just because they don’t have proof. Two, in code 196 if a man put out the eye of another man, his eye shall be put out. If a kid were to throw a pencil across the room and hit someone in the eye, his own I should not have to be poked out because of an accident of a careless nature. Three, if kids get into a fight at school and someone’s teeth get knocked out; the person could have just been providing self-defense it’s not fair to give them the consequence of code 200 If a man knock out the teeth of his equal, his teeth shall be knocked out.

I think it would be very unwise of our school to use the code of Hammurabi.First of all, there are multiple laws that have death as a punishment, when it is not reasonable. For example, one of the laws states that a female tavern-keeper who refuses to sell a drink for a certain amount ofcorn but allows a drink to be sold for another amount of money, she should be thrown into the water. Another reason is that many of these laws are much to brutal to be used at this time. Also, most of the laws would be out-of-date for pur time period. For example, the laws of slavery wouldnt apply becaue we do not have slaves, and another thing is that we no longer use crops as a common way to buy goods. -Natalie B.
I think that we should adopt the Code of Hammurabi here at Cary-Grove for three reasons. The first reason is because with Hammurabi's laws, I think that people will be pushed harder to follow the rules because of the harsh punishments. Using the laws also makes people more aware of what is going on around them, and will most likely learn how to respect people and just overall be a better person faster. The third reason is that it could help our students learn more about history! And as they say, the more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future!

No, Cary Grove should not adopt the Code of Hammurabi. First, that would make our whole school to violent and people would probably get arrested for chopping off each others hands like in law 195. Second, if anyone contradicted a teacher and said they didn't agree they might get their tongue chopped off like in law 192 which meant they could no longer be able to talk which could really hinder their life. Finally, if someones project didn't work out right and it messed up someone else's they might get killed for a simple mistake like in law 229.

I think that we should use parts of the Code of Hammurabi. For starters, it would make people follow the rules. If we used punishments like the ones in the code, people wouldn't even think of disobeying! Another reason that we should use this code is because if they do disobey, then they won't do it anymore because the punishments are a little bit harsh. A third reason is because the trouble makers wouldn't cause so much trouble and Cary Grove would have less bullying and problems!

I think that it's a great idea to adopt the Code of Hammurabi for three reasons.First I think it would intimidate and discourage people from doing bad things because the punishments are so brutal. Another benefit would be that if we enforced it kids would start getting better grades because they wouldn't be slacking off as much. Lastly I think that the Code will rub off on students and will help them to be successful polite adults. This could help with job interviews or college applications.

I believe that it would be very consequencial if Cary Grove adopted the Code of Hammurabi. If we used it it would not only hurt the students, but it would also affect many of the teachers. One reason is that since men are superior to women in the code, it would greatly unbalance the control of the school. All of the men would get higher ranking jobs (Ex. Principle...) and all the women would get lower jobs. Another reason is that most of the laws would not be able to support our time period/area. Some of the laws could be updated but many would not be able to be converted. A third reason is that the code sees murder as a unimportant task. In laws 206-214, the laws state the amounts of money that are required to be payed if you kill someone. The Code of Hammurabi would cause chaos for Cary Grove if it was ever adopted.

In my opinion, I think that adopting the Code of Hammurabi here at CG would be an utter disaster. First of all, using this law would be a complete violation of every imaginable state or federal law that pertains to the treatment of others. In fact, our school would be shut down the second that someone in power discovered the usage of these laws, creating an entirely new issue. Second off, implamenting these laws would make no logistical sense anyway, simply because of the changes of daily life throughout time. For example, when is the last time that you have seen a doctor performing careful surgery on school grounds to ensure that they do not lose their hands as a result of a mishap? Lastly, if these laws were used, I think there would be a great increase in students being untruthful in many situations. Some students could even take it to the extent of blaming their peers for made-up offenses, just to help themselves. Overall, it's a very easy decision to make, that applying the Code of Hammurabi to our high school would be an awful idea.
I do not think that we should adopt the Code of Hammurabi at Cary-Grove High School for three reasons. The first of these reasons is that it would shut down the school because killing teenagers, cutting off their hands, and making them pay (in money/food) are not acceptable punishments in today's world. Secondly, it would cause chaos among Cary-Grove because most of the rules to obey in the Code of Hammurabi could not possibly apply to kids our age. None of the kids in Cary-Grove have their own homes or husbands/wives. Lastly, the Code of Hammurabi can not be adopted at Cary-Grove because it goes against many of our countries values and laws. Administering such punishments to children would break many laws, and it is just plan too extreme for a high-school setting!

I think we should not adopt the Code of Hammurabi at CG. The laws are to brutal for young and important people to have to go through. Secondly many of them do not apply to any of us. Lastly, I dont think the staff of the school wants to remember all the laws and try to embrace every single one and would like to cut off kids hands for mindless shenanigans.

I think adopting the Code of Hammurabi could be a good thing for Cary Grove. For starters, our school would become extremely intimidating to the other schools such as Prairie Ridge or Crystal Lake South. If students at CG can put up with the harshness of the code, then people would know how tough we are. Lets be honest, we'd all like to be the top school. Secondly, since many of the law's punishments are putting people to death, there would be a lot less students at Cary Grove. I know that seems like a terrible thing, but aren't we always complaining how crowded and hot the hallways are? Well if we adopted the code, there'd be less students and the school would be quite comfortable. Lastly, Cary Grove would be a school filled with really smart and good individuals because only those would be able to survive the harsh laws. There wouldn't even be any bullies or bad kids because they'd be put to death right away.
Caroline K.
In my opinion, adopting the code of Hammurabi to CG would be impossible from a logical standpoint. First, of the about 290 laws, maybe 10 could be adopted for CG's use. Second, the laws they could use would be close to impossible to enforce. Laws like this work in big governments because they have big groups of people to be judges, jury's, and executioners. The security at CG would be woefully understaffed to carry out such laws, nor would the school have enough money to pay for it's use. Finally, even if for whatever reason all of this did happen, CG would be shut down in an instant. With punishments as completely Draconian is this, do you really think it would go more than 2 seconds before getting shut down?
Tyler N
I don't think that adopting the Hammurabi code would be a good idea. For starters these laws deal with everything from a religious stand point and we have separation of church and state. Secondly these laws would either be to harsh or to light for the punishments. I say this because jumping into the Fox River will simply not have the same effect as jumping into the Nile when you can't swim. Also chopping off hands calls for jail time in this country. Finally these laws include slavery, which is definitely not allowed in this country.
Sarah S.
No, I think it would be useless to adopt the Code of Hammurabi. First, there are over 200 laws and would be impossible for high school students to remember. Second, most of the laws would not apply to high school students in general, nor CG! Lastly, most punishments are pretty harsh and evetually, a lot of kids wouldn't be able to do the homework given out when they have no hands!
Teia S.
No, we shouldn't adopt the Code of Hammurabi because most of the punishments for breaking Hammurabi's code are extreme and would result in several lawsuits that would bankrupted District 155. Also every school board member that approved the code and all teachers that enforced it would lose their jobs permanately. Now assuming in this hypothetical scenario you will not get in trouble with our current legal system, I personally think that Cary-Grove is better when kids aren't getting killed or losing limbs. Lastly 32 of those 282 laws we don't even know. So we would be using a partial system of mostly irrelevant laws created by a brutal monarch that we know very little about. Nuts!

I do not think we should adopt the code of Hammurabi at Cary-Groove because if we do no one will want to do anything beacuse it could lead to a consequence, also people would be dying of infections all the time due to amputations, AND the people who gave the amputations would have to be replaced like every week due to people would die of all the amputations. Hence the amputators would be killed.

I do not think adopting the Code of Hammurabi at Cary-Grove would be a good idea. These codes are very discriminating to different cultures, genders, and races, which is frowned upon in today's society. Cary-Grove would also gain a reputation for being frightening and deadly, which would probably not be a very desirable image for anyone's school to have. Cary-Grove would also probably lose most of its students, as they would prefer to live in a friendlier town.
~Megin B.
The Code of Hammurabi should be adopted at Cary-Grove. My First reason is that the law would punish people to an equal effect of their crime in most situations. My second reason is that the law would discourage people to commit crimes or break rules because the penalty is known and the risk is clear. My last reason is that the code may make people treat each-other with greater respect.
Adam L....
I think that the Code of Hammurabi should be adopted by Cary-Grove for three main reasons. My first reason is that it would help make the students think about their community as a whole since some of the laws are if you hurt the community then you shall be punished. Secondly, I think that the school would instantly become one of the best schools in the country because everyone would do their homework and try their best. Lastly, I think that there would be an increase in attendance because people would not want to miss school or be late.

I dont think that we should have adopted the Code of Hammurabi at Cary Grove for many reasons. One reason is if you were to take a pencil from the teacher and somebody told on you saying that you stole you would be put to death. Another reason is if you the person who accused you of stealing was wrong he would be killed. If someone makes the wrong accusation and accuses somebody else not knowing that person shouldn't be put to death. You also shouldn't be killed for taking something as little as a pencil. The last reason is if in gym you are playing football and when you are running and your hand flys up and hits somebody in the face and you were to knock out one of their teeth you shouldn't be punished for acciently knocking out somebodys loose tooth.

I think adopting the code of hammurabi at Cary GRove would be an idea worth considering with some limitations. Reason one would be we could modify the hummurabi code like the hittites and make it less brutal for legal reasons. Reason two is with most of the laws focusing on grades we could scare kids to get good grades and do well in highschool that way they can get accepted into good schools and live successful lives. we would be helping the students for the future. Reason three would be kids would also be scared to do bad things and therefor their criminal record would be flawless and they can also lead successful lives and with a good foundation of doing the right thing they would most licky continue to keep out of trouble throughout their lives.

In my opinion we should not adapt the code of Hammurabi at CG. There are many reasons to my thinking so here are a few. First the most obvious one I think is the punishments are way to severe. You cant just go around cutting someone's hand off because they stole a pen. Second is there is way to much gray area, it is not specific enough. For example maybe you get a toe cut off if you steal a fork but if u steal a plate you loss a finger. Third and finally is it completely favors rich over poor. If a rich kid stole a piece of paper he pays a $100 fine but if a poor kid does who can't pay the fine he losses a hand. Overall it would not be a good idea to use Hammurabi's code at Cary-Grove high school.

I think adopting the hummurabi code at Cary Grove would be an idea worth considering. First of all we could modify the hummurabi codelike the hittites and make it less harsh for legal reasons. The second reason would be with the code mostly focusing on grades in the modfied verson we could have kids get better grades out of fear. That way they could get into better schools and live successful lives. We would be benefiting them in the long run. THe third reason would be with kids in fear of the code they would be scared to do wrong things and make bad desicions. That way teenagers wouldnt have criminal records and that could get a foundation for the way they should live their lives and they would most likly continue to live that way. The hummurabi code although at the moment when you have to follow it seems bad but in the long run it really could help.
The Code of Hammurabi is a on going topic still to this day about whether it is just or not. If these laws were to be put into Cary-Grove as rules I do not think that it is a bad idea on Cary-Grove's part to inhibit some of these laws. A reasoning behind this is because with these laws in affect, it has the military school feel but openness to the public. What I mean by this is that with the rules being so harsh it forces students to do their best all the time. The second reason behind looking into acquiring these laws is because kids will be more independent. These regulations make the students more independent because they are going to be scared of failing, not doing their homework, and being on time. This then allows the parents to live easier knowing that their child is responsible. The third and final reason is that everyone that is in the building at the time is always aware and cautious which I think would take out some accidental injures. This I think would happen because people are going to be more thoughtful of others instead of just thinking about themselves and their friends.
Daniel M.
I say we adopt the means that the Code was giving back then. They should be updated for modern days and be more civilized. This will help the laws become less cruel and fit in better with society. The last thing we need is people to lose an eye for an eye.
Raphael E.
I don't think we should adopt the Code Of Hammurabi at Cary Grove High School for three reasons. One, it is a very uncivilized list of laws and bringing it to a school would be a horrible idea. Two, the school would form higher and lower classes for example if a lower class male or female takes out an eye of one of her classmates or a teacher she would lose one of her eyes and the higher classes would pay a fine and they would keep their eye. My third reason is if somebody gets caught commiting a crime in the school they will be sentenced to death and this will decrease the amount of students that are in the school. All in all Cary Grove would be complete chaos if we adopted the Code of Hammurabi.
-Jimmy R.
I believe it would be interesting to adopt the Code of Hammurabi laws into the Cary-Grove High School system. One of which being that it would create a system where we would have to be perfect, and those that are not, would be disposed of. Kids would learn on the spot that they would have to rely on themselves and work, instead of using others to get what they need done. Also students would be following the 'Golden Rule' much more than they are now. I feel the Golden Rule goes hand and hand with Hammurabi's "eye for an eye" law.
~Zack R.
I believe that it would be beneficial to the students of Cary Grove High School to begin applying the Code of Hammurabi. One reason for this is that there would be no chance for kids to find loopholes in rules. Currently I think that some students find ways to "talk their way out" of detentions and suspensions. The Code of Hammurabi is so specific that it would be impossible to do this. Another reason that adopting the Code of Hammurabi would be useful is that the deans could concentrate on more important things than disciplining students. I believe that sometimes students misbehave in new and "creative" ways and the deans have to figure out how to punish these students. If we applied the Code of Hammurabi the punishments would already be decided and the would only need to be carried out. This would give the deans more time to make sure that Cary Grove is the best high school possible for its students. the final reason the adopting the Code of Hammurabi would be beneficial is that the school year could possibly be shortened. I find that that the school year is often so long because students who miss school sometimes because of suspensions need time to catch up. If these students were eliminated, then there would be no reason to have such a long school year.
Grace C.
I do not agree with adopting the code of Hammurabi at Cary Grove High-School for few reasons. First of all, the code of Hammurabi is pretty difficult to follow and many students would be punished in a critical way. Second I do not think the consequences are worth it, because nobody deserves to lose part of their body just for stealing. Finally I also believe this law is based on only Hammurabi’s point of view for a perfect society and not the perspective of the people. Following Hammurabi’s code will not do us any good because of the difficulty of following the laws and the critical consequences that people will fear.
Ish B.
I think that we should adopt the code of Hammurabi at Cary Grove High School. It would lead to a lot less crime such as stolen items. Another thing is people would not get into fights because then their hand might get chopped off. It would overall drastically decrease crime rates at the school. It would create a safer environment for people to learn. If cutting off people's hands was legal than this code would be great for CG high school.
Jake K.
I believe we should not adopt the code at CG because of three reasons. One some of the punishments were to throw the criminal in the river. But nowadays a lot more people can swim so it would not do much good. Second, if we started to cut of students hands i think it may be hard for them to write notes. third if someone is caught gossiping they will be thrown in the river. A simple call home would do more in my oppinion.
Luke H.
I think that we should not use the Code of Hamurabi at CG. If we did, there would be a drastic population decrease in Cary and the surrounding area. Also, because murder is a crime in the country as a whole, any teacher/dean/law enforcer who kills someone for bad behavior would be sentanced to jail and the school would have to hire more and more people. And finally, if students were to be killed by the school, the parents would sue the school and it would be shut down and there will never be a Cary Grove High School in Cary ever again.
~Tim Meier
I do not think that Cary Grove HS should adopt the Code of Hammurabi. My first reason is that for many of the laws, just making a mistake has a big consequence. This would make students afraid of their every action because it may cost them a big punishment. I don't think that fear in students will benefit the school in any way. Another reason is that there might be a misunderstanding and it may look like someone is committing a crime, but they aren't really. For example, law 22 states,"If any one is committing a robbery and is caught, then he shall be put to death." Someone might just be borrowing a notebook from another friend's locker with their permission and that would mean if they were caught they would be put to death. My third reason is that there are no exceptions, so if there is a misunderstanding, the person will steal be penalized. No one should suffer that severe of a crime if the whole crime was just a misunderstanding or a mistake.
I do not think we should adopt the Code of Hammurabi at Cary-Grove for three reasons. One, all of the laws applied to farming would be mostly irrelevant due to the fact we do not produce crops at Cary-Grove High school. Two, people would be issuing punishments themselves often based on the Code, and that could often result in students getting hurt for no wrong-doing. Three, having slaves at school would be horrible because it would be impossible to walk through Freshman hall with the students in addition to all of their slaves.
-Love Thor H.
I personally think that we should adopt the Hammurabi's code for Cary Grove. First, it would teach the students discipline. There would be much less detentions and tardies. Also, the students would obey the rules without question because they know the punishment will be much more severe. Secondly, it would make them respect their teachers and staff much more than before. The Hammurabi code says multiple times about respecting authority and obey people who are superior, so students would never again "talk back" to teachers because code outlaws it. Finally, there would be no more biases or discrimination. Everyone would know their place in the high school and no one would make fun of other students because that would have drastic consequences.
Jason P.
I think Cary-Grove High school should not adopt the Code of Hammurabi. Most of these laws wouldn't even apply to us. No one in our school own animals like pigs, goats(at least I think) so that wouldn't work. Nobody in our grade owns a slave(I hope). Also, no one at our school uses that type of money (silver, gur, etc.). Also, all of those laws telling you that you would lose your hand, WE NEED OUR HANDS FOR SCHOOLWORK (unfortunately). So all in all, we shouldn't because a HUGE chunk of them don't apply well with today's modern society. -Jeff Y.
I think that we should use some parts of the code of hammurabi. For one reason it gives people more responsibilty that if they do something stupid that they will learn from their mistakes and get punished for it. Another reason is that some of the laws are a little bit to reprimanding especially if someone does something by accident they should not suffer. My final reason is that the code of hammurabi will give cary grove some strengh to stop the people who slack on there school work. Over all the code of hammurabi can help cary grove in many ways.
Candace C.
I believe the code of Hammurabi should be involved at Cary Grove. First, because it would take to long to get everyone to know the rules and follow each on in a year. Secondly, because i feel these laws are out of date and need to be redone in order to be suitable for our school. Finally i feel they shouldn't be used because we are a school and not a civilization in the making. Jack G
I think that it would be beneficial to adopt the Code of Hammurabi at Cary-Grove High School. There are many disciplinary issues at Cary-Grove, and while this portion of students certainly isn’t the majority, they need to be dealt with in the most efficient way possible. The Code of Hammurabi’s harsh punishments would strike fear into all wrongdoers. Their misbehavior would be expelled for good. Hammurabi’s Code also has clearly defined rules with strict lines. Under the school’s current system, many rules are open to interpretation by different teachers, and students can use this to their advantage. With the Code, students would have a clear idea of what could and could not be done. There would be the same punishments for everyone as well. Finally, the Code of Hammurabi is organized in simple numerical order. This makes it relatively easy to find a certain rule, especially if you know its number. A large handbook with sections and subsections is too difficult to navigate. So, with all of this in mind, there is no valid reason NOT to adopt Hammurabi’s Code at Cary-Grove. Jacob N.
